LiteGait

Body-weight support systems allow individuals to practise walking safely and intensively, reducing the risk of falls while promoting recovery of gait and mobility.

What is it?

LiteGait, developed by Mobility Research, is a gait training device designed to support individuals with walking impairments. It uses a harness system to provide adjustable body-weight support while maintaining optimal postural alignment, allowing users to practise walking either over ground or on a treadmill. The system enables clinicians to assist movement of the legs and pelvis, facilitating a more natural and coordinated walking pattern. LiteGait can support both unilateral and bilateral weight-bearing and is adaptable across a wide range of functional abilities and rehabilitation needs.
Why is body-weight supported gait training important in rehabilitation?
Body-weight supported gait training allows individuals to practise walking earlier and more safely by reducing the physical load on the lower limbs and minimising the risk of falls. This creates an environment where patients can focus on relearning correct movement patterns without fear or excessive fatigue. By enabling repetitive, task-specific stepping practice with appropriate support, it helps improve coordination, balance, strength, and confidence, all of which are essential for regaining functional walking ability.

LiteGait for Neurological Rehabilitation and Walking Recovery

LiteGait is used for individuals with lower limb weakness ranging from mild to severe, including those with conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. It supports rehabilitation of walking ability by enabling safe, supported gait training. Therapy can be focused on real-life goals such as improving walking independence, increasing confidence when mobilising, and progressing from supported to unsupported walking. The system allows gradual progression of weight-bearing from minimal to full, depending on the individual’s ability and stage of recovery.
LiteGait uses a harness-based support system to partially unweight the individual while maintaining proper postural alignment. This reduces strain on the lower limbs and lowers the risk of falls, allowing for safe and controlled gait practice. The system can be used over a treadmill or on the ground, and clinicians can provide manual assistance to guide the legs and pelvis, helping to facilitate a reciprocal walking pattern. The adjustable support allows therapy to progress as strength, balance, and coordination improve.

At Hobbs Rehabilitation, LiteGait is used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation programme to support gait re-education and mobility training. It is typically used alongside conventional therapy to provide a safe environment for practising walking mechanics without the risk of falling. The system allows therapists to tailor sessions to the individual’s needs, adjusting weight-bearing and support levels to match their goals. LiteGait can be incorporated into both outpatient and intensive rehabilitation programmes to support progression towards functional, independent mobility.
