ArmMotus™ EMU

Supporting upper limb recovery through interactive, personalised robotic rehabilitation.

What is it?

The ArmMotus™ EMU is a robotic rehabilitation device designed to support upper limb movement training in three-dimensional space. It allows users to practise controlled arm movements with adjustable assistance or resistance, guided by a clinician. Interactive exercises and measurable movement data help therapists tailor training to each person’s abilities and rehabilitation goals.
How does repetitive movement practice support upper limb recovery?
Following neurological injury, the brain and nervous system can adapt through a process called neuroplasticity. Repeated, purposeful movement practice gives the nervous system opportunities to develop and refine movement patterns. Feedback helps users understand how they are moving, while appropriately graded assistance or resistance allows practice to be adapted as their abilities change.

Upper Limb Rehabilitation for Neurological and Musculoskeletal Conditions

The ArmMotus™ EMU may be used by people experiencing difficulties with arm movement, coordination, strength or range of movement. This can include people recovering from a stroke or brain injury, or those with other neurological or musculoskeletal conditions affecting upper limb function. Training can support goals such as reaching for objects, bringing the hand towards the mouth, improving arm control and developing the movement skills needed for everyday activities. Goals are tailored to each person’s abilities and clinical needs.

Conditions That May Benefit

The device uses a cable-driven robotic mechanism to guide arm movements smoothly through three-dimensional space. It offers passive, assisted, active and resistance-based training modes, allowing the level of support or challenge to be adjusted to the user. Interactive tasks provide visual, audio and movement feedback, while the system records information such as movement trajectories and range of motion. Clinicians can use this information to monitor performance and help plan subsequent sessions.
At Hobbs Rehabilitation, the ArmMotus™ EMU can be incorporated into an individualised rehabilitation programme, either as a dedicated technology-focused intervention or alongside other therapies as part of a wider programme. A clinician will tailor the training to the person’s abilities, goals and progress, integrating robotic practice with relevant functional activities and other therapeutic approaches. Its use will depend on individual assessment and the most appropriate rehabilitation plan.
