Hobbs Rehabilitation’s Multidisciplinary Stroke Service: Comprehensive Care for Recovery

January 20, 2025

At Hobbs Rehabilitation, we pride ourselves in providing a holistic and comprehensive approach to stroke recovery through our multidisciplinary stroke service. Stroke can have a significant impact on various aspects of an individual’s life, and our dedicated team is committed to supporting every step of the recovery journey.

A Team of Specialists Working Together

Our multidisciplinary stroke service brings together a team of highly skilled professionals, each contributing their expertise to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. The team includes:

  • Physiotherapists: Focused on improving movement and physical function through tailored exercises and therapies.
  • Occupational Therapists: Help patients regain independence by improving their ability to perform daily activities.
  • Speech and Language Therapists: Assist with communication and swallowing difficulties often associated with stroke.
  • Neuropsychologists: Provide support for emotional and cognitive challenges post-stroke.
  • Rehabilitation Assistants: Offer care and support to help patients manage their recovery process.

“Following a stroke people may have problems with limb weakness, speech, sensory awareness, cognition, muscle tone and balance which require ongoing therapy. At Hobbs Rehabilitation our aim is to achieve greater intensity of therapy, and repetition of movement, through an individualised programme of conventional treatment alongside the latest neurotechnology and robotics for stroke patients after their hospital journey has come to an end” – Alison Gomes Da Silva, Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist and Centre Lead at the INC, Bristol.

Personalised Neurological Rehabilitation

Every stroke patient is unique, which is why we develop individualised recovery plans. These plans are designed to address the specific needs and goals of each patient, taking into account their personal circumstances, the severity of their stroke, and their progress during rehabilitation.

For example, one of our stroke patients spent a period of 26 weeks at our intensive inpatient rehabilitation centre in Laverstock. He received full multidisciplinary input including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and clinical neuropsychology. Included in his personalised treatment plan was a range of neurotechnology; the FES bike, ExoMotus, the OMEGO bike, the M2 Robot, and the ARJO electric standaid. The positive progress of his rehabilitation journey has improved his ability to stand using a Molift raiser and carers, as well as enabled him to sit for longer periods of time, with improved balance.

Our dedicated therapists provide this bespoke and comprehensive service for stroke patients, tailoring each treatment plan to meet the unique needs of the individual. Through a holistic, hands-on approach, they focus on improving mobility, speech, and daily functional skills, ensuring patients receive the right support at every stage of their recovery journey. By combining expertise with empathy, our therapists foster an environment that promotes progress, empowerment, and a better quality of life.

Cutting-Edge Facilities

Hobbs Rehabilitation boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced neurorehabilitation technology and therapy equipment, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of therapy. Our environment is tailored to facilitate recovery, providing a supportive space where patients can focus on their rehabilitation journey.

The Neurotech Therapy Group, at Hobbs Rehabilitation Winchester offers an innovative class on Thursdays to promote upper limb activity combining neurotechnology with engaging circuit exercises. This is a perfect exercise class for people who have had a stroke to increase their mobility, activity, and sensory awareness to further enhance their independence and confidence.

Real Stories, Real Results

The effectiveness of our multidisciplinary stroke service is best reflected in the stories of our patients. These inspiring narratives showcase the resilience and progress made possible through dedicated care and support. We invite you to explore these patient stories, like Gavins’s, and case studies, such as ID, to see first-hand the impact of our approach.

“The Clinical Neuropsychologists at Hobbs are reflecting on the incredible journeys people make following Stroke, from the acute / inpatient phase and when at home afterwards and over the years that follow as challenges and opportunities come into focus at different points in their lives. We are well placed to help clients and families living with the emotional, behavioural and cognitive consequences, as they work towards the goals they set in their lives.” – Dr Ben Papps, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and Head of Service
