JS had a stroke affecting her left arm and leg, causing sensory loss and weakness. She was previously fit and active, playing golf at a club with her husband, and visiting/caring for many children and grandchildren, as well as gardening and arts and crafts, including painting.

Main Areas Affected

• Left sensory and proprioception changes
• Left upper limb and lower limb weakness
• Left vision changes – left upper quadrantanopia

Functional Ability on Admission

• Walking with a 4 wheeled walker short distances, and with a zimmer frame indoors
• Unable to walk her dog
• Having help to cook, clean, wash and dress
• Unable to do her own hair and make-up

Hobbs Rehabilitation Input

• Intensive package of rehabilitation with a mixture of physiotherapy and occupational therapy
• Physiotherapy included upper limb and lower limb strengthening, normalising movement patterns, sensory re-education, balance and gait re-ed
• Occupational Therapy focused on task practice in line with patient-centered goals such as styling her hair, meal preparation, using a knife and fork, dressing
• Focused on sensory re-education, fine motor control in function and using neurotechnology.

Functional Ability on Discharge

• Walking unaided indoors, with a walking stick outdoors
• Independent dressing including fastening trousers and bra
• Able to do her own hair and make up without help
• Able to cook, including making food for her dog
• Hoping to return to golf in the future
