A 21-year-old student, who previously represented Jersey as a Commonwealth swimmer, suffered a hemorrhagic brain injury after being kicked in the head during MMA training. They have studied Economics and Finance at university.
• Right sided weakness upper and lower limbs particularly with scapular control, ability to extend fingers, knee stability
• Right spasticity particularly in R hand with upper limb associated reaction with effort
• Reduced postural control during gait
• Walking unaided with altered gait pattern – stick outdoors
• Swimming 3x weekly with adapted swimming technique
• Difficulties using right upper limb in functional tasks such as typing, writing and cooking
They had a mixture of occupational therapy and phyiostherapy 5x a week for 4 hours of daily rehab. He completed 2 60 hours, and one 80 hour package of rehabilitation
• Postural stability work in various positions
• Sensory re-education right upper limb
• Strength training upper limb and lower limb – conventional and neurotechnology – DIEGO, AMADEO, LEXO, OMEGO, PABLO, NeuroVirt, ESO Glove, Neuro Trac 2 FES device, Syrebo Glove, plyometric work
• Walking unaided outdoors
• Able to run / jump with altered patten
• Able to kick / punch with altered technique for start of return to MMA
• Able to include right hand in day to day functions such as cooking, dressing, writing/typing, gym exercises
• Able to complete 5 pull ups with the use of an active hand
