Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a well-established, evidence-supported rehabilitation technology that uses controlled electrical impulses to stimulate nerves and muscles. This can help activate muscles that may be difficult to control voluntarily, supporting movement, function and independence.

FES can be used as part of rehabilitation for a range of neurological conditions, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain injury and spinal cord injury, in both adults and children. Its use is tailored to the individual’s condition, needs and rehabilitation goals.

FES delivers small electrical impulses to targeted nerves and muscles to produce a controlled muscle contraction. It can be used to support specific movements or functional activities, such as lifting the foot during walking or assisting hand function during grasp and release activities.

Depending on your individual needs, FES may also be used to support muscle strengthening and endurance, range of movement, tone management, oedema management and sensory re-education.

FES can be used as part of rehabilitation for a range of neurological conditions and injuries, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain injury, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy. It may also be appropriate for people with other neurological conditions depending on their individual presentation, nerve and muscle function and rehabilitation goals.

Yes. FES can be used to activate the muscles that lift the foot during walking, helping to improve foot clearance and support a more effective walking pattern where appropriate.

Yes. We provide FES assessment and rehabilitation for both adults and children with neurological conditions and injuries. Our specialist teams can assess whether FES is appropriate based on the individual’s needs, abilities and rehabilitation goals.

Hobbs Rehabilitation does not sell or distribute FES devices. Our clinicians are trained assessors for a range of FES devices and can assess your needs, recommend an appropriate device where suitable and provide support with device setup and use. Devices are purchased separately through the relevant manufacturer or authorised distributor.

FES can be provided as a stand-alone service or incorporated into an inpatient, outpatient or intensive rehabilitation programme where clinically appropriate.

As a stand-alone service, an assessment is typically 1.5 hours with a specialist neurotherapist trained in the relevant device. Depending on the device and your individual needs, this may include a trial, recommendations for purchase, device setup and follow-up reviews.

Where FES forms part of your wider rehabilitation programme, it may be used alongside other therapies and neurotechnology to support your individual goals.

Your specialist therapist will assess your individual needs, movement, muscle activation, functional difficulties and rehabilitation goals. They will also consider factors such as nerve and muscle function to determine whether FES is appropriate and how it could be used within your rehabilitation.
